In the strictest sense of the word, a masochist is someone who derives sexual pleasure from receiving pain. However, “masochist” is often used to refer to anyone who receives pain as part of a scene, but their motivations may not be simply an enjoyment of the pain itself. For many, the pleasure comes as much from the sense of giving up control than from the receiving of pain.
