Sensation play is a form of S&M that involves creating pain through sensations primarily on the skin. Some sensation play is light and not particularly painful at all: feathers, rabbit fur, fingers drawn ever-so-lightly on the skin, etc. More painful sensation play can involve knives, pinwheels, vampire gloves, claws, etc. (Although the level of pain can vary widely depending on how those tools are used.) Also, fire play and electric play are generally classified as sensation play.
