In the strictest sense of the word, a sadist is someone who derives sexual pleasure from another person’s pain. However, “sadist” is often used to refer to anyone who inflicts pain as part of a scene, but their motivations may not be simply an enjoyment of the pain itself. For many, the pleasure comes as much from the sense of control than from the infliction of pain.
